Prosthetic shoulder surgery

Personalised solutions to improve shoulder mobility and reduce pain, even in the most complex of cases.

Long-term pain relief

the shoulder prosthesis eliminates chronic pain caused by arthrosis or severe injuries, restoring freedom in daily movements.

Rapid recovery

where possible, arthroscopic techniques make it possible to restore the majority of mobility, enabling a return to daily activities.

Minimally invasive approach

reduces recovery time and complications, ensuring a faster and less painful post-operative experience.

Do you suffer from any of these problems?

Is shoulder pain limiting your daily life? Do you have difficulty lifting objects or even just moving your arm?
If this situation sounds familiar to you, you may have one of the following conditions
that may require surgery:

Shoulder arthrosis

Wear and tear of cartilage leads to chronic pain, stiffness and limited mobility. Over time, the joint loses its ability to move, making even the simplest of actions such as dressing or combing one's hair more difficult.

Tendon injuries

Rotator cuff injuries can cause weakness and pain, impairing the normal use of the arm. When tendons cannot be repaired, prosthetic surgery is the only way forward.

Severe fractures

Severe or poorly consolidated fractures of the humerus can cause deformity and a limitation in function. In these cases, prosthetic surgery is often the only solution to recover mobility.

Shoulder prosthetic surgery is an effective solution for patients suffering from these problems and who have not responded to conservative treatment. With surgery, joint function can be restored, the pain reduced and quality of life improved.

Minimally invasive shoulder surgery

In clinically suitable cases, Dr Trevisan uses state-of-the-art surgical techniques
to ensure that surgery is less invasive and recovery is faster.

Shoulder arthroscopy

This method allows injuries and fractures to be treated with small incisions, reducing trauma to the surrounding tissues and accelerating the healing process. Ideal for patients with degenerative diseases or tendon injuries.

Balloon technique (Balloon Orthospace)

An innovative technique that is implemented by inserting a biocompatible "balloon" into the shoulder. The aim is to create space and improve movement in patients with severe rotator cuff injuries, particularly in cases where complete repair is not possible.

Anatomical and inverted prostheses: made-to-measure solutions

Dr Trevisan offers two main types of prosthesis, selected according to the patient's specific condition:

Anatomical prosthesis

Ideal for patients with tendons and muscles that are still functional.

It replaces the humeral head and the glenoid cavity. This allows a resumption of natural mobility and a significant improvement in pain levels.

Reverse prosthesis

Ideal for elderly patients with severe injuries.

When the rotator cuff is severely damaged and cannot be repaired, this prosthesis reverses the dynamics of the joint, using the deltoid muscle for arm movement.

Intervention Steps

Assessment and planning

We perform a thorough assessment of your case, using diagnostic tests such as X-ray and MRI. We then choose the most suitable type of surgery and prosthesis based on the results.

Intervention

After anaesthesia (local or general), surgical access is undertaken. In most cases, arthroscopy is undertaken using small incisions. For more severe cases, however, an open approach is necessary.

Prosthesis insertion

The damaged parts of the joint are removed, and the prosthesis (anatomical or inverted) is implanted with precision. During the procedure, we check the stability and functionality of the prosthesis.

Rehabilitation

Once the surgery has been completed, the shoulder is immobilised with a brace. From this point on, you will begin a rehabilitation programme to gradually regain mobility, with full recovery expected within 3–6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it painful?

Thanks to local or general anaesthesia, you will feel no pain during the procedure. Normal post-operative pain is managed with pain-relieving drugs, and is gradually reduced during rehabilitation.

Recovery varies from patient to patient, but typically lasts between three and six months. After surgery, you will follow a rehabilitation programme to improve mobility and shoulder strength.

As with any surgery, there are risks, although these are rare. These include infection, nerve injuries, joint stiffness and problems with the prosthesis. Nevertheless, modern techniques minimise these risks.

Modern prostheses can last for many years. On average, more than 90% of shoulder prostheses are still functional after 10 years, and 80% after 20 years, depending on use and patient care.

Prosthetic shoulder surgery is suitable for patients who suffer from severe pain, that interferes with their everyday quality of life and are unable to find relief with conservative treatments such as physiotherapy or injections.
